It's the story of the cross. It's old made new, red washed white. It's love.
It's what makes any old and future mistake a clean slate.
But sometimes, our past is a presence we can't seem to shake
Even the smallest mistake can haunt someone. You know you're covered in grace. Saved. Forgiven.
But, you continue to look back on those mistakes and dwell on them and the person you once were. Let me tell you, I've been there and that's the devil talking.
There was a point in my life where, although fully knowing Jesus died to set me free, the devil had a hold of me. He used every little mistake and failure in my life to hold me down and keep me from moving forward in my life.
I think believers often forget that the devil is smart and he wants to fight. He knows how to break a person. He wants to bring a battle into your life because he wants God to lose. He wants us to lose God.
For me, that battle was often started by the devil telling me God's grace was not enough for me. God's love was not enough for me. God's kingdom was not a place for me.
The devil wants to use anything he can as ammo to take you down. And one of the best ways he knows how is messing with our mind:
Those bad memories you buried, let's dig them up.
Those times you laid to rest, let's bring them to life.
That person you used to be, you'll always be.
It took me awhile to understand that the devil was never going to stop putting thoughts in my head and telling me who I was. He is never going to stop trying to bring you and I down. It's just what he does.
It took me awhile to realize that no matter how much I was attacked, I was armored and I could fight back. I had his worst enemy on my side.
It took me awhile to know that no matter how many battles I did have to face, they were already won.
When Jesus died on that cross, He won the battle. When He rose again, He won that battle.
The battle is already won.
Grace won. Love won.
Those battles we fight, help us grow.
When the devil forces you to look back on your mistakes, look at them as if you're looking forward.
There's a line between dwelling on the past and simply looking back on it to help you grow, don't be scared to look back and learn from yourself. Just don't let the devil tell you that that past is your present and your future.
Look at your mistakes as the pieces that God is using to build you into who you are now and who you are meant to be.
Look at the old you as a canvas of God's grace.
Your mistakes and failures, they don't define you. But, you can use them to define the person you are now. You can use who you once were and what you once did, to tell your story.
Don't ever be ashamed to tell your story.
You're a story of God's grace.
A portrait of His love.
You are worthy. You are loved. You are enough. You have a seat at the table.
Turn what the devil wants to be a way to tear you down, into something used for good. The last thing he wants is for you to turn your story into your testimony, and tell that testimony to bring light to how good God's grace and love is. So, do that.
You are armored in grace, the battle is won- don't be scared to look back.
