I saw a quote while scrolling through pinterest that really hit me, because I've been there.
It read, "I learned a lot about being a friend when I was alone." It's not a good place, being lonely.
It's dark, it's sad, it hurts. But, it really is true, you do learn a lot about being a friend when you're alone, and you learn a lot about Jesus, too.
Before you think this blog post is going down a totally depressing route, I promise it's not.
I just see a missing piece in the Christian community where mental illness' and bad feelings aren't talked about, are swept under the rug, and seen as something "Christians don't deal with".
So, I'm here to talk about it.
There's a lot of ways being lonely comes about. Maybe your family doesn't seem to really care, maybe you have no friends, maybe you have some friends but they're not being what a friend should be, maybe you just lost someone you love, maybe you're struggling with a mental illness that makes you feel lonely.
I suppose as ironic as it sounds, when you're feeling lonely, when you are lonely, you are not alone.
And believe me when I say, I have been there. Many times.
But, amidst those feelings of loneliness, there is always Jesus.
When we fully grasp that we always have Jesus with us, things will start to change.
I get that Jesus isn't physically here, but He is here spiritually, at all lonely hours.
Jesus is the true definition of a friend.
He loved, He was present, He listened, He accepted, He cared, He was selfless.
John 15:13 says, "Greater love has no one than this; to lay down ones life for His friends."
For His friends.
That right there, says it all.
Jesus died to save everyone, and all those people He called His friends.
That's you. That's me. That's every person you meet.
And let me tell you, when you have Jesus as a friend you learn how to be a friend yourself.
There are so many lonely people out there.
If you've been lonely yourself, you know how easy it is to hide it.
So, lets learn from Jesus.
Jesus was a friend to sinners, a friend to all.
Maybe someone needs you to be that kind of friend.
The person that sits by themselves at lunch. The shy person. That friend you used to have, check up on them, see how they're doing. The person that never gets invited out. The person that dresses differently. The person that has different beliefs. The person that just lost a family member or ended a relationship. The person you always see alone.
Talk to those people.
Text and call those people.
Invite those people.
Be there for those people.
Be the friend you wish people had been for you when you were lonely.
I pray that if you're reading this, you're not lonely.
But, I also pray that if you are, you can trust that you have Jesus with you.
If you're not lonely, I hope that this inspires you to be there for someone that is.

To help you through the lonely hour, here's some Bible verses to lean on:
THE NAME 'BACKPACK + A BIBLE' ORIGINATED FROM WHAT FIRST SPARKED MY IDEA TO START THIS BLOG. I LOVE THAT IT REMINDS ME OF WHERE IT ALL BEGAN - MY LOVE FOR THE LORD AND HAVING A BACKPACK ON MY BACK, WHETHER THAT BE HIKING OR BACKPACKING OR HOPPING ON AN AIRPLANE. I PRAYED GOD WOULD USE ME TO BE A LIGHT AND HE LED ME TO THIS. I LOVE BEING ABLE TO SHARE HIM THROUGH EXPLORING HIS CREATION. BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN HE NUDGES ME TO SHARE MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY MOUNTAIN PHOTO, AND THATS WHY THIS PAGE IS HERE -
HERE YOU'LL FIND THE WORDS GOD HAS PUT ON MY HEART TO SHARE WITH YOU. THE MOST IMPORTANT PAGE ON MY BLOG, I HOPE THESE POSTS BRING ENCOURAGEMENT, LIGHT + LOVE IN YOUR LIFE. THESE POSTS MAY NOT BE FREQUENT, BUT THAT IS BECAUSE I WANT TO SHARE WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN ME TO SHARE, NOT SOMETHING FORCED. I HOPE WHEN YOU READ THESE YOU ARE ABLE TO SEE THAT THEY TRULY COME FROM THE HEART.
